Please join the School-Based Health Alliance for a 60-minute webinar focused on how school-based health center (SBHC) providers can support students who have experienced teen economic abuse. Our colleagues from Futures Without Violence will share findings from a national survey of adolescents on the prevalence and impacts of teen economic abuse, including educational interference. They will describe the dynamics of teen economic abuse, and they will offer strategies SBHC providers can use to support their patients.

Presenters: 

Ana Lόpez van Balen, MSW, Vice President of Economic Security and Justice at Futures Without Violence 

Ana leads the Workplace and Economic Justice team at Futures Without Violence and drives the strategic direction for their work. She has over twenty-two years of executive experience working with community stakeholders to support economic development and revitalization, community development, and social programming for vulnerable and marginalized communities including women and girls.  She started her career providing social services at a transitional housing program for Latina survivors of domestic violence and later ran a community-based organization in the greater Washington, DC area that addressed the impact of gender-based violence on low-income immigrant elementary and middle school girls. She spent the last decade in local government mitigating the economic needs of vulnerable families and supporting local small businesses that serve low-income communities. Ms. Van Balen holds a master’s degree from the Columbia University School of Social Work, and a bachelor’s degree from Vanderbilt University in Human & Organizational Development with a concentration in Community Development and Social Policy. She has a Certificate in Public Management from George Washington University’s Council of Governments Institute for Regional Excellence. She is a Presidential Leadership Scholar, a Daily Record’s Maryland’s Top 100 Women, a Center for Progressive Leadership Executive Fellow, a Washingtonian of the Year, and Eugene & Agnes E. Meyer Foundation Exponent Award winner.   

Jordyn Battle, Program Specialist at Futures Without Violence 

Jordyn is a program specialist on the Workplaces & Economic Justice team at Futures Without Violence. Prior to joining Futures, she worked with local, state, and federal governments, as well as with various nonprofits focused to improve access to education and employment opportunities. Her career reflects a deep commitment to addressing systemic inequities, particularly at the intersections of racial equity, women’s empowerment, and economic justice. Jordyn holds a Master’s degree in Urban Planning from New York University, where she concentrated in city and community planning. She also earned a Bachelor’s degree in Public Policy & Government/Politics from the University of Maryland, College Park.
