The School-Based Health Alliance (SBHA) is pleased to announce that 20 organizations have been awarded one-time funding to provide coordinated, culturally sensitive, and developmentally appropriate health care services at more than 90 new or expanded school-based health centers (SBHCs) in 30 communities across Connecticut.
“This funding will significantly improve students’ access to health care throughout Connecticut,” said Robert Boyd, President and CEO of the School-Based Health Alliance. “By conveniently providing primary, mental health, or dental care in schools, students can get back to class quickly and continue learning.”
The funding was made possible by the Connecticut Department of Public Health, which chose SBHA to administer the funds and provide training and technical assistance for awarded organizations.
A competitive review process narrowed the 133 applications submitted by 24 sponsoring organizations (such as school districts, community health organizations, behavioral health organizations, or nonprofits) to the sites that were awarded funds. Awarded organizations can use the funds to support the workforce for outreach, primary care, equipment purchases, mental or behavioral health, telehealth, mobile services, dental care, and health promotion or education.
“We are delighted to have been chosen to receive funding that will enable our Hartford Public Schools’ Dental Program to transition to a digital x-ray system,” said Deborah Chameides, Director of Nursing and Clinical Services at Hartford Public Schools, which operates 17 school-based dental centers in the district. “This important upgrade to our program will improve our efficiency and help us continue to provide the high standard of care that our students deserve.”
Klingberg Family Centers provides critical mental health services to three elementary schools in the Consolidated School District of New Britain. The funding will allow Klingberg “to substantially increase our services in these schools, from two to three days a week to a full five days a week,” said Steven Girelli, Ph.D., President and CEO at Klingberg Family Services.
Throughout the funding period, SBHA will provide monthly training and technical assistance, collect and review data, oversee and disburse funds, provide resources, and facilitate a learning network with awardees.
